Citigroup Enhances Partnership with Coinbase

According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Citigroup is enhancing its partnership with cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase as it integrates the latter’s infrastructure to facilitate stablecoin transactions for its clientele. This collaboration is an extension of their prior agreement made in October 2025, which concentrated on streamlining transactions between conventional currencies and digital assets for institutional clients, as well as investigating alternative methods for converting traditional fiat currencies into stablecoins.

Key Components of Citigroup’s Digital Asset Strategy

While detailed specifics about which stablecoins or blockchain networks will be integrated remain vague, Citigroup has recently detailed four essential components of its digital asset strategy:

  • Enhancement of Citi Token Services
  • Promotion of interoperability within the systems
  • Development of custodial and tokenization services for cryptocurrencies
  • Establishing banking solutions for virtual asset service providers

Citi’s Role in the Digital Asset Landscape

Citi views its role as a crucial conduit connecting traditional fiat currencies with stablecoins and other digital tokens. In a significant move earlier this August, the financial institution introduced its Custody+ platform, announcing an intention to start offering custody services for native digital assets, with Bitcoin being the first to be incorporated, by the end of 2026. This new crypto service will join its established custody offerings in the bank’s portfolio.

Engagement with Tokenized Securities

Furthermore, Citigroup has been actively engaging with tokenized securities, launching Digital Depositary Receipts for shares in private firms in June, which utilize a regulated blockchain framework operated by SIX, with Citi serving as both the issuer and custodian. As part of its innovative thrust, Citigroup distinguished itself by becoming the first American bank to handle live transactions on the blockchain-based ledger of Swift.
