Rising Scams in New Jersey
Recent incidents in New Jersey have highlighted the alarming rise in scams, resulting in substantial financial losses for local residents. According to a police report from Franklin Township covering the period from August 30 to September 5, two individuals fell victim to separate scams totaling $54,000.
Case Studies of Scams
In one troubling case, a Somerset woman was assisting a relative with what appeared to be fraudulent activity on a bank account when a scammer remotely accessed her computer. Under the pretense of securing funds, the perpetrator instructed her to deposit $29,500 into a Bitcoin wallet. Only later did she realize that she had been conned. Her family member who was involved in the original account fraud also fell prey to the scheme, losing an additional $12,000.
On September 2, another New Jersey resident encountered a different scam involving impersonation. A caller claiming to be from her bank warned her about supposed fraudulent transactions and advised her to withdraw $24,500 to prevent these transactions from processing. The victim was misled into handing over this cash to a man in a white sedan, who claimed it was for safekeeping as evidence, before discovering the truth of the deception.
Moreover, a third local resident reported a $1,020 loss via Cash App after receiving suspicious text messages that appeared to originate from her bank.
Community Warnings and Recommendations
In light of these cases, police officials are urging community members to exercise caution. They recommend:
- Directly contacting their banks for verification when receiving urgent financial alerts.
- Refraining from transferring money or investing in cryptocurrency based on unsolicited communications.
