Consensys Addresses Security Breach Allegations

Amidst disturbing claims of a potential security breach, Consensys, a prominent Ethereum software company, has categorically dismissed allegations regarding the compromise of user data or funds following an incident involving an individual tied to North Korea.

Incident Overview

The situation arose earlier in the year when a contractor known by the pseudonym “Tyler Knapp”, whose GitHub handle was “imyugioh”, gained unauthorized access to the foundational code of MetaMask, one of Consensys’s most widely used Web3 wallets.

The contractor was not part of Consensys’s direct workforce but was instead brought in as a consultant through an undisclosed third-party provider. Between March 9 and early April 2026, this individual made contributions to the codebase, primarily focused on enhancing the wallet’s fiat conversion features.

Response Actions

As soon as Consensys became aware of the security risks, they acted decisively by halting all product updates, cutting off the contractor’s access, and initiating an extensive internal audit of their security protocols. Furthermore, the company reported the breach to law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.

Clarification and Assurance

In a post shared on X (previously Twitter), Consensys addressed the rampant misinformation surrounding the event, clarifying: “Earlier this year, we identified and contained a threat from an individual engaged as a consultant through a third-party provider. After swiftly recognizing the threat, we terminated all access, conducted a comprehensive investigation, and involved law enforcement.”

The results from Consensys’s audit reassured users that no malicious code had been introduced and confirmed that customer data and assets remained secure. The company concluded with a firm statement:

“Our investigation confirmed that no damage occurred, and there was no impact on user safety, funds, or security.”
