Fractal Bitcoin Achieves Milestone with Inaugural Halving Event

Fractal Bitcoin has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of its inaugural halving event at block 2,100,000, resulting in a reduction of its block reward to 6.25 FB. This change coincided with the implementation of the FIP-102 upgrade, which earmarks a corresponding 6.25 FB budget for future emissions intended for distribution on the Bitcoin mainnet.

Announcement and Network Performance

In an announcement made on X on September 8, Fractal Bitcoin confirmed the halving’s success, stating that network nodes and indexing services were functioning properly during the initial 10 minutes post-upgrade. The organization emphasized its commitment to maintain oversight of network performance and urged users experiencing issues to reach out.

Changes Introduced by FIP-102

As part of the halving, FIP-102 introduces a new consensus framework that alters the way future FB distributions are managed, aligning with the broader Bitcoin ecosystem. Importantly, this proposal does not increase the overall supply of FB or create distinct allocations for tokens shared through Bitcoin.

Previously, Fractal’s block reward stood at 25 FB. The recent halving first reduced this amount to 12.5 FB and then further to 6.25 FB, while simultaneously initiating preparations for the next halving event. This means that blocks on the Fractal network will continue to be allocated via three different mechanisms: Merged Mining, Permissionless Mining, and Index Mining, each receiving an equal share of the 6.25 FB block reward post-halving.

Future Distribution Plans

The remaining 6.25 FB will eventually be available for distribution via user activity on the Bitcoin mainnet, although it is important to note that this full allocation will not be immediately rolled out. Instead, the Fractal team is planning for a gradual launch following the upgrade. FIP-103 will detail the mechanics of this distribution along with technical requirements and the processes for converting FB between the Fractal platform and the Bitcoin mainnet.

Comparison with Bitcoin’s Halving Structure

The halving process resembles Bitcoin’s own structure, which undergoes scheduled reductions in block subsidies—an event that occurs roughly every 210,000 blocks. Bitcoin currently provides miners with a reward of 3.125 BTC per block, with further halving events expected approximately every four years.

Conversion and Future Integration

Efforts are underway to facilitate a 1:1 conversion between FB on the Fractal side and its equivalent on Bitcoin, ensuring no additional units are created in the process. A gradual implementation of the Bitcoin mainnet distribution is anticipated over a three-month period, with ongoing updates and testing planned leading into 2026 and 2027.

Fractal’s recent advancement follows its partnership with Bitcoin miners, allowing substantial integration of resources which leverage the identical SHA-256 mining algorithm shared by both networks. As part of enhancing its infrastructure, Fractal launched its mainnet in September 2024. The platform also supports various Bitcoin-centric applications such as UniSat’s Hexa trading engine, providing innovations in speed and additional block space for users.

Conclusion

Going forward, the structure established under FIP-102 maintains the overall emission target at 12.5 FB per block across both Fractal and Bitcoin, while the next anticipated halving for Fractal is designated for block 4,200,000. This ongoing integration into the Bitcoin framework reinforces Fractal’s role in the evolving crypto landscape while keeping familiar supply mechanics intact.
