Hana Bank and Upbit Global Collaboration

In a significant step for South Korea’s digital asset landscape, Hana Bank has collaborated with Upbit Global to establish a robust infrastructure addressing Travel Rule compliance for cryptocurrency transfers. This partnership, announced on September 22nd at Hana Bank’s headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul, aims to enhance the technical aspects of digital asset transactions by ensuring regulatory adherence in a rapidly evolving crypto economy.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) highlights the focus on creating systems that can effectively handle the technical verification of personnel involved in the sending and receiving of digital assets. This cooperative effort will facilitate secure data transmission between service providers and help connect financial institutions with virtual asset entities, both domestically and internationally.

Travel Rule Technology

Upbit Global, leveraging its existing Travel Rule technology via its affiliate VerifyVASP, already utilizes a system that safeguards personal information while verifying the identities of parties involved in virtual asset transfers. The Travel Rule mandates that virtual asset service providers (VASPs) acquire and store sender and recipient details during applicable transactions, as well as relay this information securely to the counterpart service provider.

Regulatory Adaptation and Compliance

Both Hana Bank and Upbit Global plan to analyze how these regulatory mandates can be adapted for interactions among various categories of financial service providers, which includes enhancing verification processes for both senders and recipients. The technical cooperation will move ahead with testing infrastructure that could effectively support transactions involving both banks and domestic or foreign virtual asset service firms.

As part of this arrangement, the two firms also aim to remain agile in response to evolving digital asset legislation, with a commitment to sharing compliance-related information. The Travel Rule framework is not foreign to South Korea’s crypto landscape, where Upbit restricts transactions that do not comply with its requirements. This includes enforcing verification for large deposits and maintaining the status of inbound transfers from exchanges failing to meet compliance standards until further investigation.

Hana Bank’s Engagement with Digital Finance

This initiative marks yet another development in Hana Bank’s expanding engagement with digital finance. The bank intends to tap into its expertise in foreign exchange, payments, and settlements to explore new financial services centered around digital assets. Notably, Hana Bank has recently secured a 6.55% stake in Dunamu, Upbit’s parent company, for approximately 1.003 trillion won, which is roughly $670 million. This investment has attracted the attention of regulatory bodies over concerns related to the separation of banking activities from commercial enterprises.

Furthermore, Hana Financial Group has established strategic ties with Dunamu to innovate a financial model that bridges traditional banking with the digital asset sphere. In 2023, its subsidiary Hana Financial TI successfully conducted a proof of concept for a stablecoin backed by the Korean won, utilizing the XRP Ledger within the group’s blockchain initiative.

Partnerships and Innovations

Expanding its service offerings, Hana Bank has partnered with BitGo for digital asset custody services and holds a 25% ownership stake in BitGo Korea, which became a registered virtual asset service provider in August 2026. This arrangement further aligns Hana Bank with the regulated digital asset infrastructure necessary for contemporary banking operations.

Amidst these developments, South Korean financial institutions, including Hana, continue to experiment with blockchain applications in payment processing and regulated products. Hana Financial Group’s earlier collaboration with Standard Chartered has already laid groundwork for enhanced digital asset projects such as stablecoins and custodial services.

Adding to the momentum, other players like Eugene Investment & Securities are also exploring blockchain capabilities for securities-related transactions. They signed a deal with BEATOZ to investigate the feasibility of using stablecoins for tokenized securities subscriptions, preparing for the anticipated regulatory developments set for February 2027.

Conclusion

In sum, Hana Bank and Upbit Global’s alliance symbolizes a burgeoning synergy between traditional financial mechanisms and the virtual asset sector, driven by a commitment to uphold regulatory standards including anti-money laundering safeguards.
