Introduction to Ledger’s New Crypto Loan Feature
Ledger, a prominent manufacturer of cryptocurrency hardware wallets, has introduced a groundbreaking feature enabling users to leverage their Bitcoin (BTC) holdings as collateral to secure stablecoin loans. With this new Crypto Loan functionality, users of the Ledger Wallet can deposit wrapped Bitcoin (either wBTC or cbBTC) directly through the application and borrow stablecoins such as USDC or USDT without relinquishing control over their crypto assets.
How the Crypto Loan Functionality Works
This innovative service utilizes the on-chain lending framework provided by Morpho and is integrated into the Ledger app via Yield.xyz. One of the standout features of this offering is that it allows borrowers to maintain their exposure to Bitcoin throughout the loan duration, as the collateral remains securely on-chain, minimizing the risks compared to traditional lending where assets may sit on another party’s balance sheet.
Security and Transparency Measures
“Morpho is an onchain credit network; the smart contracts govern every interaction, and your collateral stays on-chain.”
Throughout the process—from loan approval to repayment and withdrawals—each transaction step is displayed clearly on a Ledger hardware device, ensuring transparency through plain-language descriptions of every contract action.
User Experience and Tools
Moreover, the app provides users with tools to monitor their loan-to-value (LTV) ratio, add additional collateral, and make repayments, interactively allowing users to simulate loans prior to finalizing any agreements. Ledger is also enhancing user experience by incorporating direct access to Morpho’s lending markets alongside specially curated vaults for depositing, borrowing, and earning yield across Ethereum (ETH) and several significant layer-2 solutions.
Important Considerations for Borrowers
Prospective borrowers should be aware that interest rates will fluctuate and that there are potential liquidation risks; the Crypto Loan feature’s availability may vary depending on users’ countries. Importantly, Ledger clarifies that it functions solely as a technology provider and does not offer financial guidance, ensuring users make informed decisions.
