Ledger Investigates Financial Losses Linked to Hardware Wallets
Ledger, the prominent cryptocurrency hardware wallet provider, announced on Friday that it is conducting an investigation into alarming reports of significant financial losses linked to its devices. Users, particularly those who purchased wallets from a specific reseller, have taken to social media to express their frustrations, claiming that their assets have been siphoned off despite implementing strong security measures, including safeguarding their seed phrases and refraining from any unauthorized transactions.
Reported Losses and User Experiences
In one notable case, a Reddit user reported a loss nearing $100,000 in USDT, insisting that their wallet was securely stored and had never been actively used for transactions beyond receiving funds. In light of these incidents, Ledger publicly acknowledged the disturbing claims on its official support account on X, and revealed that the issue might be tied to products sold by a reseller called CryptoBillis.
The company stated, “Ledger is investigating reports of loss of funds from users in Southeast Asia who purchased products from a reseller named CryptoBillis.”
As a preventive measure, Ledger requested that CryptoBillis halt all sales and shipments of its devices while the inquiry unfolds.
Financial Impact and Investigations
Blockchain data investigations have revealed extensive activity involving funds being withdrawn across multiple cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron, and others. Research from a known investigator identified losses amounting to over $42 million in Ethereum, around $17.5 million in Bitcoin, and approximately $16.5 million in USDT, culminating in total estimated losses exceeding $86 million by Friday morning.
To ensure the safety of their customers, Ledger advised anyone who has recently bought a device from CryptoBillis not to activate their wallets and suggested that those who have already set them up should consider transferring their cryptocurrency assets to a new Ledger device with a new seed phrase.
Community Reactions and Industry Insights
The situation has caused a stir online, with users expressing increased anxiety about the security of their holdings. Nevertheless, some industry leaders, like Changpeng Zhao of Binance, have urged caution, stating,
“There is currently no indication that a broader vulnerability exists across Ledger’s range of devices. The reported issues seem to stem from a supply chain breach involving a single vendor,”
reinforcing Ledger’s longstanding reputation as a secure brand in the hardware wallet sector.
As the inquiry proceeds, Ledger has committed to keeping its customers updated about significant developments regarding these troubling reports.
