Significant Shift in South Korea’s Cryptocurrency Landscape
A significant shift in South Korea’s cryptocurrency landscape is underway as Mirae Asset, a prominent financial group, announces its ambitious plan to develop a digital asset venture valued at approximately 150 trillion won, equivalent to $109 billion. This initiative revolves around Digital X, which is the rebranded identity of Korbit, the country’s pioneering cryptocurrency exchange established in 2013.
Mirae Asset’s Acquisition and Strategic Plans
Having secured a commanding 97.15% share of Korbit for 141.4 billion won in July, Mirae Asset has repositioned the exchange to cater to a broad spectrum of digital financial products, including cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and security token offerings. There are also plans to innovate by tokenizing tangible assets such as gold, silver, and electricity. This strategic move marks a significant milestone, as it represents the first instance of a South Korean financial institution taking control of a local crypto exchange.
Vision for Digital X
At a recent event for Digital X employees held in Seoul, Park Hyeon-joo, the founder and chairman of Mirae Asset, emphasized his vision for the exchange, stating its crucial role in what he termed ‘Mirae Asset 3.0.’ To attract users and stimulate trading activity, Digital X has introduced a temporary measure to eliminate trading fees for all assets denominated in won, a policy that is expected to last until August 24, 2027.
Future Outlook
Despite being South Korea’s first cryptocurrency exchange, Korbit’s market presence diminished over the years, accounting for a mere 0.5% of the nation’s total cryptocurrency trading volume as of 2025, according to data from the Fair Trade Commission. This new undertaking by Mirae Asset is poised to reshape its future and possibly enhance its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving digital asset sector.
