Polish Olympic Committee Head in Custody
The head of the Polish Olympic Committee, Radosław Piesiewicz, has been taken into custody as part of an ongoing criminal investigation linked to the financial collapse of Zondacrypto, a cryptocurrency firm that had previously sponsored Poland’s Olympic team. Announced on August 27 by Waldemar Żurek, the country’s justice minister and prosecutor general, Piesiewicz is facing potential charges in light of mounting evidence related to significant fraud and connections to unsanctioned financial activities amongst right-wing political figures in Poland.
Connections and Allegations
An investigative report from The New York Times, along with contributions from Polish news agencies Wirtualna Polska and TVN, revealed connections between Zondacrypto and notable public figures in Europe. Allegations surfaced that Przemysław Kral, the ex-CEO of Zondacrypto, gifted expensive items to Piesiewicz, including a luxury watch valued at $46,605, in exchange for leveraging his position to assist Zondacrypto with regulatory matters involving UOKiK, Poland’s consumer protection body. Piesiewicz refuted these claims, asserting that the watch was purchased with his own money and that Kral only facilitated the transaction.
Financial Collapse and Backlash
In 2025, under Piesiewicz’s leadership, the Polish Olympic Committee entered into an agreement making Zondacrypto its official sponsor for the impending 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. However, the firm collapsed in April, leaving clients with reported losses exceeding $94 million. Kral has since reportedly fled abroad, following his criticism of the Polish government’s cryptocurrency regulations.
Political Tensions and Investigations
Piesiewicz, who took office in 2023 during the regime of the national-conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, has faced criticism and division within the sports community. After Poland’s poor performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, he found himself at odds with Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s administration.
Tensions mounted when Zondacrypto failed to fulfill financial obligations to Olympic athletes, leading to a significant backlash – with 82 out of 106 board members of the Polish Olympic Committee actively seeking Piesiewicz’s removal.
Expanding Investigation
The investigation into Zondacrypto is expanding, with Polish prosecutors examining the cryptocurrency firm’s financial connections across the political landscape. Investigative targets include organizations linked to Zbigniew Ziobro, deputy leader of PiS, as well as figures from the Confederation party and the media network Telewizja Republika. Tusk has highlighted potential links to Russian organized crime within the allegations, leveraging the situation to critique political foes. Despite attempts by Tusk’s ruling coalition to introduce regulations governing the cryptocurrency market, these efforts have repeatedly been thwarted by vetoes from President Karol Nawrocki, an ally of the opposition who argues such regulations hinder financial liberties.
