Negotiations Between Hyperliquid and Payward

Reports indicate that Hyperliquid is negotiating with Payward, the parent company of Kraken, to potentially introduce its perpetual futures trading services to American investors. This development was highlighted in a Bloomberg article published on Monday, citing anonymous sources familiar with the ongoing discussions.

If finalized, this agreement would allow U.S. traders to engage with a specific set of Hyperliquid’s crypto-related perpetual futures via Bitnomial, Payward’s regulated exchange and clearinghouse for digital assets in the United States.

Significance of the Development

This move represents a significant milestone for Singapore-based Hyperliquid Labs, which has previously prohibited U.S. customers from using its rapidly expanding trading platform. Furthermore, it could serve as a model for other international, non-registered trading venues looking to enter the U.S. market.

However, any such partnership would still need to receive the approval of regulatory bodies. According to Bloomberg, Payward has allegedly submitted a proposal to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) outlining the foundational aspects of this arrangement, although financial details remain undisclosed.

Challenges and Regulatory Concerns

A key issue that has kept Hyperliquid from entering the U.S. market lies in its decentralized nature. The platform, which boasts a staggering daily trading volume of over $4 billion, operates without a central authority, allowing access to all users. This framework, while appealing for trading flexibility, raises concerns for regulators regarding risks such as market manipulation, money laundering, and the evasion of sanctions.

By utilizing Bitnomial’s regulated infrastructure, Hyperliquid would be able to comply with the necessary oversight and safeguards.

Political Context and Future Prospects

This latest development follows recent comments from former President Donald Trump, who indicated during a White House event that his administration is making efforts to bring Hyperliquid’s services onshore. Trump’s statements suggested that CFTC Chairman Michael Selig is exploring options to enable Hyperliquid’s entry, which resulted in a notable surge in the value of the platform’s HYPE token.

Additionally, as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and CFTC advance regulations, the prospect of drawing offshore perpetual futures trading into U.S.-based platforms is becoming increasingly tangible, especially given the much larger scale of the offshore market compared to its domestic counterpart.
