Standard Chartered Expands Cryptocurrency Presence
In a significant move towards expanding its presence in the cryptocurrency sector, Standard Chartered has officially signed binding agreements to acquire Zodia Custody, an entity focused on the custody of digital assets. This comes after shareholders of Zodia accepted the bank’s initial non-binding proposal in May, although the transaction is still contingent on obtaining necessary regulatory approvals and satisfying closing conditions.
Acquisition Details
The acquisition will see Standard Chartered gain full ownership of Zodia Custody UK Limited, which supervises regulated operations across several key markets including Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Luxembourg, and the United Arab Emirates. This transition not only broadens the bank’s portfolio in crypto services but also aims to integrate Zodia’s custody operations into the broader Securities Services framework of Standard Chartered.
Development of Zodia Solutions
Additionally, the software and service assets owned by Zodia will be allocated to Zodia Solutions, an independent unit developed under SC Ventures. This entity is poised to furnish a robust digital asset infrastructure tailored for financial institutions, enhancing the bank’s ability to cater to their clients’ evolving needs.
Strategic Initiatives
Standard Chartered has been eyeing the integration of Zodia’s crypto custody capabilities into its corporate and investment banking operations since April. The bank’s recent venture into cryptographic trading—launching spot trading services for Bitcoin and Ether aimed at institutional clients in the UAE—further exemplifies its strategic initiative to deepen its engagement in the digital currency landscape.
Commitment to Cryptocurrency Market
In light of these developments, Standard Chartered continues to explore diverse opportunities within the cryptocurrency market, indicating a resolute commitment to establishing itself as a leader in this rapidly evolving financial arena.
