Peter Schiff’s Critique of Bitcoin

Peter Schiff, a prominent gold investor and a longstanding antagonist of Bitcoin, has seized the opportunity presented by the rejection of the CLARITY Act to reiterate his belief in Bitcoin’s lack of value. He declared unequivocally that Bitcoin is “worthless” and claimed that no legislative action from Congress is needed to affirm this point, responding sharply to optimistic remarks made by cryptocurrency enthusiast Anthony Pompliano.

Setback for the Cryptocurrency Sector

The U.S. Senate did not advance the CLARITY Act on Tuesday, marking a significant setback for the cryptocurrency sector, which had hoped for clearer regulatory guidelines. To move forward, the proposal required 60 votes, yet notably, all Democratic senators who participated in the vote opposed it. This outcome prompted Galaxy Digital’s CEO Mike Novogratz to express his profound disappointment via social media, suggesting that the government system appears dysfunctional. Novogratz implied that with the upcoming U.S. elections influencing legislative decisions, the remaining issues among lawmakers seemed insurmountable.

Responses from Industry Leaders

While the result was disappointing for many in the cryptocurrency community, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong maintained a sense of cautious optimism, suggesting that although the Senate’s decision was disheartening, it should not be seen as conclusive defeat. He hinted at the possibility of bipartisan discussions resuming and stated that the legislative fight could continue in the future, albeit under unlikely circumstances. Armstrong also posited that the SEC and CFTC already possess sufficient authority to implement more defined regulations on cryptocurrency without waiting for Congressional action.

Changpeng Zhao, or CZ, co-founder of Binance, shared a slightly hopeful perspective too, highlighting that despite the setback, stablecoins could continue to generate yields. Meanwhile, there were those against the cryptocurrency movement who reveled in the defeat of the CLARITY Act, such as Rep. Brad Sherman, who has consistently criticized such legislation, expressing relief that the Senate majority saw through it.

Additionally, investor Ross Gerber joined the chorus of Bitcoin skeptics, labeling the Senate’s decision as yet another failure for the cryptocurrency.
