Increase in Physical Assaults Targeting Cryptocurrency Holders

The surge in physical assaults targeting cryptocurrency holders has seen a noteworthy increase, especially as the potential for a bull market looms, raising concerns for those investing in digital assets. An alarming new interactive map, unveiled on September 21 by Jameson Lopp, co-founder and chief security officer of Casa—a company dedicated to bitcoin self-custody—indicates that France has become one of the most dangerous locales for such attacks, challenging crypto owners everywhere to prioritize their safety.

Statistics on Attacks

Lopp’s map consolidates information from a database tracking publicly reported incidents since 2014, revealing that France has experienced a total of 68 attacks related to crypto assets—ranking it first among countries. The U.S. trails with 59 incidents, while the U.K. follows with 24. However, when analyzing attacks relative to population size, Hong Kong emerges as the most dangerous with a staggering 1.72 attacks per million residents, albeit it is not a sovereign nation. Georgia, particularly in its Russian-occupied regions, is second, and the United Arab Emirates rounds out the top three ahead of France.

Shockingly, in 2026 alone, France experienced a near tripling of attacks in the first nine months to 41, an alarming statistic compared to a decrease worldwide. French officials, including Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, reported 77 incidents in the first half of the year, suggesting the true figures might surpass those documented.

Security Awareness and Attack Success Rates

Despite this troubling trend, recent statistics show that some bitcoin holders are becoming acutely aware of the risks and have taken steps to bolster their security. Data from Chainalysis reveals a significant decrease in attack success rates, dropping from 67% in 2024 to 26% through mid-2026. Analysts attribute this drop to a wide data leak affecting numerous French citizens, thereby increasing the attack opportunities without a corresponding rise in effectiveness.

Rise in Crime Related to Cryptocurrency

Crime related to possession of cryptocurrencies is reportedly on the rise following a damaging incident where a local tax official sold crypto ownership information. Such breaches have reportedly led to a sharp upturn in home invasions and kidnappings, now known to account for 45% of reported attacks, as per data from Gart, a security services provider for crypto users. Home invasions alone have spiked from 14% of incidents in 2025 to 37% this year.

The dangers extend beyond confirmed crypto owners; even those suspected of possessing cryptocurrencies are falling victim to crime, with misdirected attacks becoming more common as thieves rely on stolen data. The landscape has grown so dire that a family in France was wrongfully targeted on three separate occasions after their association with cryptocurrency became apparent.

Evolving Methodology of Criminals

Additional insights from the crypto asset security firm Certik have surfaced, indicating that the methodology behind targeting individuals has evolved. Victims are no longer solely sought through social media or public events; criminals can now gather extensive intelligence using leaked databases and public records, making it easier to identify and profile victims.

Concerns Over Data Breaches

With international efforts ramping up to fill tax reporting gaps related to cryptocurrencies, the shared risk of data breaches grows. Global standards like the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) are set to intensify data sharing across jurisdictions in the coming years, raising further concerns about personal data security. Statistics show that Europe grappled with an average of 443 personal data breaches daily in 2025, marking a 22% spike from the previous year, which indicates a troubling trend for cryptocurrency users whose safety may hinge on the effectiveness of these initiatives.

Enhancing Personal Safety

While external risks are challenging to manage, individuals can adopt certain precautions to enhance their personal safety. Experts from Certik have detailed practical strategies to mitigate risks and protect against potential losses during attacks. As digital currencies continue to grow in popularity and value, these measures have never been more critical.
