Legal Troubles for California Man

A 26-year-old man from California is facing serious legal troubles after he allegedly exploited a friendship with an elderly retiree to drain his cryptocurrency account. William Ly, a resident of Simi Valley, is accused of manipulating the situation with the 89-year-old victim, who he had befriended at a local breakfast club for seniors.

Details of the Exploitation

The incident reportedly began in June 2024 and continued until September 2025, when the retiree discovered that he had lost a significant sum of money—over $97,000—through a series of unauthorized transactions involving his Coinbase account.

Investigation and Charges

The investigation into the matter was initiated by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office in November 2025, following a report of financial exploitation that involved an elderly individual. Detectives uncovered that more than 80 individual cryptocurrency transfers had been made, leading to the alarming total loss. The funds were subsequently traced back to accounts and digital wallets that authorities allege belong to Ly.

On August 4, Ly was apprehended and charged with several offenses, including grand theft, identity theft, and financial abuse of an elder. This case, which has drawn the interest of local law enforcement, also involved collaboration with the FBI and the Ventura County Fraud Working Group throughout the lengthy investigation.

Call for Information

Furthermore, investigators are concerned that Ly’s actions may not be isolated, prompting them to seek information from anyone else who may have been similarly victimized. Those with relevant details are urged to get in touch with Senior Deputy Andrew Van Gundy at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office at 805-494-8231.
