Standard Chartered Introduces Innovative Tokenized Deposit Service in Hong Kong

Introduction of Tokenized Deposit Service

Standard Chartered has officially rolled out a groundbreaking tokenized deposit service aimed at corporate clients in Hong Kong, marking this city as the inaugural location within the bank's global operations for this innovative offering. Announced on November 2, the service is tailored specifically for corporate treasurers, financial institutions, investment platforms, and businesses involved in digital assets.

Technology and Functionality

Utilizing the bank’s proprietary blockchain technology and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s EnsembleTX platform, this service facilitates around-the-clock transfers of bank deposits among participating institutions. The system allows for real-time settlement using central bank money, including wholesale central bank digital currency (wCBDC).

Standard Chartered noted that firms such as China AMC, Finloop, and PantherTrade have already engaged in live tokenized deposit transactions and settlements, demonstrating the practical application of the service in managing tokenized money market funds.

Partnerships and Future Expansion

In collaboration with Fireblocks, Standard Chartered is enhancing its digital asset platform by integrating banking services, while HashKey is also joining the ecosystem of participating firms. The bank has plans for future expansion of this service to other markets.

Benefits for Corporate Clients

Eligible corporate clients will benefit from the ability to use tokenized commercial bank deposits for various purposes, including treasury management and inter-company transfers. Unlike traditional bank transfers, which are often restricted by banking hours and schedules, this blockchain-based platform allows for seamless transactions at any hour.

This new service combines regulated bank deposits with blockchain efficiencies, enabling firms to oversee their liquidity using digital treasury systems while remaining compliant within the commercial banking framework.

Development and Regulatory Support

Developed with support from the HKMA’s Supervisory Incubator focusing on Distributed Ledger Technology, the EnsembleTX platform connects banks for transactions involving tokenized financial assets and money. By utilizing central bank money for interbank transactions, the arrangement aims to enhance settlement reliability and mitigate counterparty risk.

Standard Chartered’s internal blockchain system specifically manages the tokenized deposit features accessible to qualifying customers.

Project Ensemble and Future Ambitions

This latest initiative follows the HKMA's introduction of EnsembleTX in November 2025 as part of their Project Ensemble, which began experimenting with tokenized financial transactions in 2024. The platform was designed to facilitate real-value transactions and to further the capabilities of participating institutions beyond initial experimental phases.

In a related report from September, crypto.news highlighted the HKMA's future ambitions to implement around-the-clock wholesale CBDC settlements for tokenized deposits by the close of 2026, which includes provisions for after-hours trading in derivatives worth over HK$1.3 trillion.

Leadership Insights

Mary Huen, Standard Chartered's CEO for Hong Kong and Greater China, expressed enthusiasm about the progress made through EnsembleTX and indicated the bank's commitment to aiding clients in managing treasury operations, facilitating liquidity transfers, and conducting digital asset transactions on an international scale.

The partnership with Fireblocks aims to provide banking functionalities via the digital asset infrastructure, while HashKey's involvement adds a significant digital asset player to the network—although details on the specific services offered by HashKey have yet to be disclosed.

Practical Implementations

In terms of practical implementations, China AMC, Finloop, and PantherTrade have already utilized EnsembleTX for authentic transactions involving tokenized deposits and money market funds.

Standard Chartered's global head of Transaction Services and Digital Assets, Ole Matthiessen, emphasized that the new service is designed to streamline fund movements between various banks and markets, integrating digital currency into established treasury and investment workflows with existing banking protections.
