Introduction of WORPT
A new digital wallet application has arrived in Thailand, aimed at enhancing the payment experience for international visitors by allowing them to seamlessly convert stablecoins into Thai Baht, facilitating purchases at local establishments. Dubbed WORPT, the platform was introduced as part of a regulatory sandbox initiative established by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to promote innovative payment solutions for tourists.
Collaboration and Functionality
WORPT comes as a collaboration between Waan Exchange and Wipay, enabling travelers to utilize their digital cryptocurrencies—currently restricted to well-known stablecoins like USDT and USDC—to exchange for local currency. This service utilizes the Thai QR Promptpay network, ensuring that transactions remain straightforward and efficient for both consumers and merchants.
The platform has been designed to handle the complete payment process—from the acceptance of digital token deposits, through conversion to Baht, to transmitting payments to local sellers. Notably, while merchants do not directly accept cryptocurrency, the payments are nonetheless settled in traditional currency through established payment systems, maintaining operational familiarity.
Future Enhancements and Goals
WORPT exemplifies a significant collaboration involving various players in the fintech and retail sectors, including established entities such as Visa, stablecoin provider Tether, and retail leader The Mall Group. Future enhancements are in the works, including physical and virtual Visa prepaid card options, which will simplify financial interactions by allowing users a unified balance for both QR code and card payments.
According to Pavin Jittiwongsamarn, co-founder of WORPT, the initiative aims to enhance the experience of global visitors by enabling effective use of their existing cryptocurrencies during their stay in Thailand. The goal is to streamline processes for ease of use, thus broadening payment options for tourists.
Regulatory Compliance and Launch Plans
In adhering to regulatory standards, WORPT is committed to meeting necessary requirements for identity verification and transaction monitoring to combat money laundering, as outlined by the sandbox framework. Key figures from the platform highlighted the historical perspective toward cryptocurrencies predominantly as investment assets, underscoring the importance of this initiative in enabling their practical use in everyday transactions.
An official launch event is planned for November 2026, featuring discussions with experts from Tether, The Mall Group, and regulatory representatives, to explore the future landscape of digital asset payments within tourist economies.
This development coincides with an active effort by Thailand’s securities regulator to introduce spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for cryptocurrencies, aimed at bolstering market liquidity and participation.
