El Salvador’s Bitcoin Management Controversy
Amidst swirling accusations regarding the management of El Salvador’s bitcoin assets, President Nayib Bukele firmly rejected claims that control over the country’s strategic bitcoin reserves had been handed over to a private entity. He asserted that such reports are “completely false,” emphasizing that only the shares of Chivo Wallet were allocated to a private operator, not the actual bitcoin held by the government.
Response to Media Reports
These clarifications followed a report from El País, a major Spanish news outlet boasting over 17.6 million unique visitors, which suggested that El Salvador transferred considerable ownership—specifically over 7,763 bitcoins, valued at approximately $632 million—to a private company. This claim was based on a statement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which has been influential in detailing El Salvador’s economic strategies.
President Bukele wasted no time in countering these assertions on social media, where he pointed out that the IMF’s release explicitly clarified that the transfer in question pertained solely to Chivo shares, a matter that had already been raised about 18 months prior. He criticized various media outlets for misrepresenting the information.
Economic Performance and Future Outlook
Adding to this, Bukele highlighted the positive recognition from the IMF regarding the nation’s economic performance, noting that El Salvador has surpassed growth anticipations and met fiscal commitments. He underscored the country’s progress in achieving a primary fiscal surplus, improving public service efficiency, and significantly reducing poverty levels, all of which have been bolstered by heightened security and investor confidence.
However, the IMF’s commentary did mention that the continuing accumulation of the nation’s bitcoin reserve—which now stands at over 7,766 BTC—was linked to private donations. Furthermore, the IMF indicated that no additional accumulation of bitcoin was expected going forward. Despite this, El Salvador has maintained its bitcoin purchases.
Challenges in Cryptocurrency Adoption
The Central Bank of El Salvador has also issued reports revealing that remittances in cryptocurrency constitute less than 1% of the overall volume received, signaling challenges in the adoption of bitcoin as a mainstream currency for transactions within the country.
