FBI Confiscates Cryptocurrency Linked to Hamas
In a significant law enforcement action, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confiscated over $560,000 in cryptocurrency that was earmarked for Hamas. This operation, executed with judicial approval, not only involved seizing digital assets but also dismantling the online infrastructure that the militant group utilized to gather funds and enlist supporters. The Justice Department made the details public on September 1, highlighting a persistent crackdown on activities connected to Hamas’ military division, the Al Qassam Brigades.
Details of the Operation
The targeted initiative included taking control of specific domains and servers linked to Hamas’ fundraising efforts. According to the Justice Department’s statement, funds were seized during three distinct operations spread across the year, particularly noting actions on March 25, June 25, and October 10, 2025. The seized funds primarily originated from a network of at least 17 cryptocurrency addresses identified as channels for Hamas, which had reportedly moved more than $1.5 million in donations since October 2024.
Investigators managed to track these transactions using public blockchain technology and corroborative intelligence from human informants. They specifically targeted an encrypted chat group that directed participants to a funding website, which included a dynamic list of cryptocurrency addresses for donations. In addition to the cryptocurrency funds, the FBI disrupted Hamas’ online fundraising platforms as well, enhancing their ability to intercept digital donations sent by supporters.
Broader Measures Against Hamas
This latest operation marks a continuation of broader measures against financial transactions associated with Hamas. Earlier in July 2025, a separate civil forfeiture effort resulted in the freezing of $2 million in assets linked to financial activities run by a Gaza-based entity accused of supporting Hamas through platforms like Tether and Binance. This, coupled with previous sanctions imposed by the U.S. Treasury and international partners, reflects a concerted international response aimed at curbing financial networks that facilitate terrorist organizations.
The Treasury Department has previously identified a substantial influx of approximately $12.7 billion in potential fraudulent digital asset activities, raising concerns about the intersection of cryptocurrency and terrorism financing. Meanwhile, financial authorities in various countries, including Israel, have similarly acted to freeze associated cryptocurrency accounts, demonstrating an escalating global effort to tackle the misuse of digital currencies for funding terrorism.
Ongoing Investigations and Warnings
The FBI’s investigative efforts have also revealed the identities of thousands of individuals who sought to contribute to Hamas, raising alarms about the breadth of support for the organization both domestically and internationally. As these investigations advance, authorities continue to urge financial institutions to remain vigilant against signs of activity that might point to support for Hamas, especially campaigns urging donations through unconventional means like cryptocurrencies.
