Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority Partners with Securitize

The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in Dubai has recently formed an agreement with Securitize, a company backed by BlackRock, to promote innovation in tokenization and the regulatory landscape surrounding it. Through this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the two organizations aim to enhance the digital asset infrastructure within Dubai and the broader United Arab Emirates.

Goals of the Partnership

The partnership is designed to create a supportive environment for regulated tokenization efforts and increase the role of institutional participants in Dubai’s digital asset space. Announced on Thursday, this collaboration intends to engage in various projects initiated by VARA to draw in talent and to define the operational parameters for tokenized financial products in alignment with local regulations.

“Dubai is a highly progressive hub for digital asset innovation,”

Carlos Domingo, CEO and co-founder of Securitize, commented on this initiative, underscoring the necessity of working alongside regulators as tokenization transitions from a theoretical concept to an integral part of mainstream finance.

Global Trends in Tokenization

The MoU comes in the wake of a notable rise in global interest towards tokenized assets. For instance, just days prior, the London Stock Exchange announced a partnership with Kraken to allow tokenized stock trading, reflecting a similar trend in financial technology-oriented regions.

VARA recently issued its 50th virtual asset service provider license, awarding it to Tribe Tokenisation FZE in July, further highlighting the regulatory authority’s commitment to fostering a dynamic digital landscape. While Securitize currently leads as the largest tokenization platform globally, managing approximately $4.9 billion in tokenized assets, the cooperation with VARA aims to build a broad framework conducive to mutually beneficial tokenization ventures in Dubai.

Future Outlook

Despite not outlining specific projects at this time, a VARA representative indicated that the agreement is primarily focused on establishing a collaborative basis rather than detailing technological developments. Notably, the demand for tokenized assets is growing, as indicated by the 103% increase in Real World Asset (RWA) holders over the last month, reaching a total of 3.2 million, reflecting a 2% surge in the value of tokenized assets, now at $38.5 billion, according to RWA.xyz data.

As Dubai positions itself as a leading jurisdiction for digital asset progress, the partnership with Securitize is expected to be pivotal in shaping its regulatory environment and enhancing its status on the global stage for tokenization initiatives.
