The FATF is reviewing crypto hubs to improve global anti-money laundering standards, with findings expected by June 2027.

FATF Launches Review of Cryptocurrency Compliance in Key Jurisdictions

FATF's Examination of Cryptocurrency Operations

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has commenced a specialized examination focusing on various jurisdictions heavily involved in cryptocurrency operations, aiming to pinpoint deficiencies in their adherence to international anti-money laundering (AML) protocols. This initiative, as disclosed by FATF on Friday, seeks to evaluate locations characterized by substantial activities involving virtual asset service providers (VASPs) while considering the current compliance levels of these areas.

Findings and Timeline

Although the FATF has not yet revealed specific jurisdictions involved in this scrutiny, the findings from the initial evaluations are slated for release in June 2027, followed by further insights in October of the same year. The ongoing assessments, paired with expeditious reporting, will enable the FATF to monitor improvements in addressing existing compliance gaps more effectively.

Challenges in Compliance

This review emerges in the wake of a FATF report published in July, which indicated that while 83% of the surveyed jurisdictions had enacted regulations corresponding to the crypto Travel Rule, significant challenges remained in enforcement practices. Specifically, the report pointed out that out of 91 jurisdictions with established Travel Rule laws, 55 had not undertaken any supervisory action to ensure compliance.

Additionally, many authorities faced hurdles in identifying unregistered crypto operations and regulating service providers that cater to local consumers from abroad.

The Importance of the Travel Rule

The Travel Rule mandates that cryptocurrency service entities must relay information regarding both the sender and recipient involved in digital asset transfers, underscoring its importance in the global effort to combat money laundering.
